Position Summary

The Communications Editor is a full-time, salaried, exempt position that: assists in the ongoing public relations and marketing activities of Ability360 to maintain and enhance its image and brand in the community and to media, donors, volunteers and consumers; and, assist in the development and implementation of measures designed to evaluate the success of the strategic communications program.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent work experience.
  • Five-seven years of progressively responsible experience in journalism, marketing or public relations, including media relations and digital communications.
  • Superior writing, editing and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong project management, administrative and organizational skills.
  • Proven abilities in digital communications/social media tactics and strategies.
  • Working knowledge of AP style guide and the NCDJ style guide on disability in journalism.
  • Exhibits comfort in front of the camera and behind it.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Develop and manage creative content and oversee editorial direction of LivAbility magazine as the go-to disability media outlet for Arizona and beyond.
  2. Create and edit content for and about people with disabilities.
  3. Assist the program staff in developing all promotional materials and communications strategies for their units, including promotional and editorial content.
  4. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with media representatives to promote coverage of Ability360 activities, events, and accomplishments.
  5. Identify opportunities to increase the awareness of Ability360 on a local and national level.
  6. Develop collaborative partnerships and community outreach opportunities with Ability360 staff, volunteers, consumers, supporters, media contacts, consultants and vendors.
  7. Work with businesses and organizations to reach the disability community through advertising, cross promotion, feature stories and sponsored content.

Other Related Duties

  1. Design, write, edit, coordinate printing and update: all organizational brochures and office correspondence materials.
  2. Manage social media content.
  3. Develop and maintain media contact list (print, television and radio contacts).

Other Skills/Knowledge Required

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of WordPress, Hootsuite and Google Docs. Job will require use of Slack and Asana. Individual must be willing to learn about disability culture and etiquette.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
