On Saturday, October 26, 2013 nearly one hundred athletes from around Arizona rolled through the front doors of the Virginia G. Piper Sports & Fitness Center for Persons with Disabilities (SpoFit) for the 1st annual Duel in the Desert presented by Bank of America. This competition highlighted the Tucson and Phoenix rivalry in the sports of Wheelchair Rugby, Wheelchair Basketball and Power Soccer.
Throughout the day, SpoFit was filled with family and friends of athletes, SpoFit members, and community neighbors to watch the excitement of the games. From the sound of cheering fans, athletes encouraging one another, and the occasional sound of tires popping, the day was nothing short of memorable.
Lunch was provided to all attendees, volunteers, and athletes and enjoyed outside in the beautiful “fall” weather of Arizona. This was a great opportunity for guests to interact and meet the athletes that included those rookies, new to the sports, and seasoned Paralympian athletes. One attendee quoted “Duel in the Desert was a great experience with the exposure to the sports and how adaptations are made. The facility is instrumental in providing a great venue that enables the players to interact with others in a competitive and inclusive environment. I hope to see many more events like this for all the athletes and hope it inspires others to begin playing.”
After the competition ended, guests were invited to stay for the “after-party” to celebrate the athletes and their hard work. Dinner and drinks were enjoyed by many!
Overall, the Duel in the Desert presented by Bank of America was a huge success. It is estimated that upwards of 600 guests attended throughout the day. We could not have made this event possible without our sponsors; Bank of America, VMI, Cybex, GNC, AZ Spinal Cord Injury Association, and ABC Home Medical Supplies, and of course our awesome team of volunteers and staff.
Thank you to everyone who attended this event and we look forward to seeing you all next year!
