Boasting 11 power soccer teams from around the US and Canada, the 2013 Power Blast Power Soccer Tournament was a great success! Chairs sped across the courts all weekend as the competition was fast and action-packed! Among the teams playing in the tournament, and playing in their first competition, was SpoFit’s very own team, the Spark! The players were nervous entering their inaugural tournament, but once the starting whistle sounded, they settled in and played fearlessly. The first day of the tournament, they faced two very strong opponents in RHI Sudden Impact and the ASU Sun Devils, the two teams who would play for the tournament championship. Although they didn’t come out on top, they played hard and always stayed positive, despite the score.
On Day 2, they had a marathon session, playing three games. Their opponents were fierce, but it was against the AZ Heat Destroyers that the SpoFit Spark notched their first win, a 4-0 shutout! The final day of the tournament saw the SpoFit Spark facing the AZ Heat Elite, with both teams looking to end the weekend on a winning note. The Spark trailed early and found themselves down 2-0 at halftime. They came out much stronger in the second half, shutting out the Heat Elite, but couldn’t find goals to cut the deficit. Although they lost 2-0, they played like champions, not letting more experienced teams intimidate them. Now that they have real game experience, they’re hungry to get back on the court!
In the championship match, RHI Sudden Impact and the ASU Sun Devils squared off in a rematch from the day before. Although the score was much closer, ASU still came out on top with a 4-1 victory. However, RHI didn’t go home empty-handed as Zach Dickey was named tournament MVP.
If you, or someone you know, are interested in trying out power soccer, class is held every Friday from 5-7pm at SpoFit. We at SpoFit were thrilled to host again this year, and want to thank Arizona Disabled Sports for a fantastic tournament. We’re excited to do it again next year!
