Richard Shoemaker learned about SpoFit at St Joseph’s Hospital after he had a stroke last year. He started coming to the fitness center regularly when the New Tricks program began. Richard says, “Coming to New Tricks has taught me how important it is to stay healthy, eat right and exercise. I find it very inspiring to come and see the successes of others as well as myself.” Richard also adds that it is the direct and personal assistance that staff at SpoFit provide that have encouraged him to persevere and develop a workout that has already improved his health.
Victoria Sutherland is currently an intern at SpoFit. She is studying at The University of Regina in Saskatchewan Canada. With the help of her supervisor, Jessica Amato, they developed the New Tricks program as a way to offer senior citizens the opportunity to receive training specifically designed for people who have a disability, have had a stroke, or suffer from ailments such as arthritis.
New Tricks is offered every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 10:30 (2014 schedule). For details about all programs for senior visit our Seniors tab.
