Two people in wheelchairs playing lacrosse

Wheelchair Lacrosse (WCL) is a mixed team sport for male and female athletes. This sport combines elements from lacrosse and hockey into a wheelchair format. WCL is played with eight players on one team. The goal is to move the ball as a team through passing and athleticism from the defensive end to the offensive end and finish by shooting the ball into the other team’s goal. This sport requires the utmost teamwork and effort to be effective. Contact between wheelchairs is permitted, and is in fact an integral part of the sport as players use their chairs to block and pressure opponents.

Wheelchair Lacrosse is a growing sport that was started in 2009 with many new organizations building programs regularly. Those who play the sport are pushing for it to become the next nationally recognized adaptive sport and hope that one day it’s competed at the Paralympic Games.
