Mike Madrid knows the value of caregiving, and for good reason. He’s been a caregiver for over two decades.
Madrid, a caregiver who has worked with Ability360’s Home Care Services for eight years, had his skills recognized in December, 2025, when he was nominated for and awarded a certificate by Banner University Family Care. The honor is given to caregivers who go above and beyond, showing exemplary care each day.
Madrid was nominated by his case manager for his exceptional care he has provided to people in the community.
“I was amazed that I got this award for all my skills that I learned throughout my years as a caregiver,” Madrid said. “I really appreciate being given that award. I was surprised and amazed by it. I felt good, you know. When they called me up about getting a certificate, I was shocked. But, I thought that I deserve it for all my years and work I have done as a caregiver.”
Madrid started working as a caregiver 22 years ago. His desire is to use his talents to help people who need it.
Plus, in his own words, Madrid understands that one day he may need the same help that he gives, so he gives it while he can. His first experience with caregiving came when his father was diagnosed with cancer, and Madrid helped his sister with providing family care.
“I enjoy caregiving,” Madrid said. “During the time that my dad had cancer, and my mom with Alzheimer's, my sister was working with my dad, and I helped her out and she told me, ‘You know what, Mike, you are so good at this, why don’t you go to an outfit and get some practice doing what you do?’”
From there, Madrid took some training courses to become a full-time caregiver, with a focus on helping aging adults.
“It takes a lot of courage, and it takes knowing that, if you are a caregiver, you need to have patience. I enjoy doing it and will do it as long as I can until I can’t do it anymore. As I said, I am 74 but feel strong and want to continue caregiving as long as I can.”
