You probably haven’t given caregiving much thought unless you have provided it or needed it. Then, you realize just how important caregiving is. In fact, it’s so important that an entire month each year is dedicated to the appreciation of family caregivers with the recognition of National Family Caregivers Month every November, and rightly so. In 2025, there are 63 million Americans1 who provide ongoing care to adults or children with a medical condition or a disability.
Behind the scenes, caregivers play a vital role in supporting families, communities, and the economy. Almost two-thirds of caregivers provide assistance with basic tasks such as bathing, dressing, bathroom needs, feeding, mobility and more. Their support enables people to live in their homes and communities, increasing their independence and quality of life. In some cases, the care given allows a person with a medical condition or disability the chance to pursue and maintain employment.
The majority of caregivers in Arizona care for an adult (about 94% according to this report), and the adult receiving care is often a parent. When one becomes a family caregiver, even though the relationship will be different, the benefit of keeping the family together is profound. Keeping families together in the home as opposed to an institutional setting is crucial in keeping adults aging in place and individuals with disabilities linked with their communities.
That rings especially true for Jesus Guerra, whose son serves as his primary caregiver at home.
“It’s important for me to have my son to be my caregiver because I feel comfortable with him,” Jesus Guerra said. “I feel like somebody has my back. I like that. I like to spend time with him. Family caregivers help make a stronger family, and a stronger community.”
