Marilyn is currently a student at Glendale Community College and was working towards her A.A.S in Exercise and Personal Training. Recently she decided she wanted to go for a Bachelor Degree in Exercise Science instead. In the Spring Marilyn will be transferring to Phoenix College to complete a standard Associates degree so she can transfer to a University. Unfortunately, in the summer of 2016, Marilyn will be moving to Oregon. She is hoping to attend either Oregon State University in Corvallis or Pacific University in Forest Grove. Her goal is to become an independent personal trainer and potentially a fitness blogger. Besides volunteering, her hobbies include hiking, cooking and tending to her 6 pet chickens. Marilyn’s husband and son are the most important things in her life and she is looking forward to the day she can quit her job, personal train part-time and live in a tiny home on wheels.
Marilyn has been a volunteer at Spofit since June of this year. Spofit was introduced to her though a professor at GCC after she informed the professor that she had an interest in wanting to specialize in inclusive training. After seeing the Spofit facility she knew she had to be a part of it in some way. The members and staff at Spofit are all such incredible people and Marilyn looks forward days volunteering every week. Since starting to volunteer, Marilyn has helped in the fitness room, cleaning up and helping members use equipment. She is hoping, in the near future, to start volunteering as a group fitness instructor. Her favorite part of Spofit is the relationships she has created. Everyone she has met is so warm and kindhearted; “it’s really a great environment to be around”.
Marilyn is a hardworking, caring and passionate volunteer that SpoFit staff and members greatly appreciate. Her desire to learn about inclusive exercise doesn’t go unnoticed. She is great working with others. If you see Marilyn up in the fitness on Thursday mornings tell her congrats for being SpoFit’s outstanding volunteer of the month for September.
