Ability 360, Chicanos Por La Causa, and AARP Phoenix are proud to sponsor the 2nd Annual Latino Disability Summit and Resource Fair Saturday, September 16, 2017. This all day Summit, the first of its kind in Arizona, will provide a day of inspiration, information, and resources to families affected by a disability.  Over 50 agencies and exhibitors will be on hand to talk-one-on-one with individuals, many will have Spanish speaking staff on site to help individuals connect to resources and services.  Demonstrations, screenings, and prize drawings will be held throughout the day as well as a kid zone with sensory and accessible activities. Mariachi music will add festivity to this family fun event.  Everyone is invited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month Saturday, September 16th at the 2nd Annual Latino Disability Summit and Resource Fair.

Discussion on the effects and treatment of opioid abuse among individuals with disabilities.

Movement and Nutrition for Heart Health

This interactive session includes information about the heart health status of Latinos in Arizona and nationwide. Prevention strategies will be discussed, including physical activity movement for ALL abilities and heart healthy cooking demonstration.

Protecting Yourself and Your Loved ones: The Basics of Special Needs Trust and Guardianship

Presenters: Michelle Roddy, Artemis Law Firm

This session will provide you an overview of what you need to do to protect your special loved ones. It will include information about how to file for a guardianship when your loved one becomes an adult. It will also explain the reason to create a special needs trust to protect your loved one’s government benefits in the wvent of the caregiver’s passing.

Families: The Role of Promotores in Our Community
Presenter: David Aguirre, CHW / Research Technician ASU Nursing and Health Innovations department

We will focus on the role of Promotores in the well being of our communities, we will
discuss how effective it has been the use of CHW’s (Promotores) in providing information and support to families with family members that have a disability and or other chronic condition. Promotores have been the link between services and the community for many years, with proper training they can be a key component in the management and treatment of many illnesses. Mentally challenged individuals are often segregated and often discriminated because of the stigma and lack of education in the Latino communities.

Growing up with a disability comes with its own unique set of challenges. However, with the right type of support and determination, young adults can achieve their goals and live an independent lifestyle. This presentation will include a panel discussion of young adults with disabilities from the self advocacy group YAC-AZ where they will talk about the obstacles they have overcome to achieve their goals.

Social security Disability Benefits

Presenters: Jack Burns, Public Affairs Specialist for Social Security in Arizona.

This presentation will explain the different benefits available throught Social Security and the different beneficiaries who may receive them. It will also explain how eligibility works, and the need to monitor your work history and consider income from other sources.

Work Incentives

Presenter: Emily Lopex, Benefits2Work Intake Specialist, Ability360

The presentation focuses on education of Social Security (SSA) benefits and
encourages employment. I will be discussing some of the work incentives that help individuals get back to work without necessarily losing their benefits once they do so. This is an intervention to move people with disabilities out of poverty. Along with this I will discuss Work Incentive Planning & Assistance (WIPA).

Noon Panel Discussion

A panel of Latinos with disabilities will share their stories and start the conversation about what it means to be a Latino with a disability
