Objectives:
- Strengthen community resilience and share disaster planning best practices.
- Provide a discussion based forum to bring together communities, individuals, and organizations working on disaster readiness for persons with disabilities and individuals with access and functional needs.
- Ensure shared knowledge and understanding of current preparedness issues, plans, processes, and procedures.
Arizona Focus on Whole Community Preparedness
The goal of this task force is to ensure all emergency sheltering plans seamlessly address access and functional needs requirements as a result of whole community planning. Together with outreach to personal care attendants, emergency planners, the public, organizations, and communities working on disaster readiness for persons with disabilities Arizona can build community preparedness capabilities. This event seeks to educate and inspire community resiliency. The summit seeks to focus on emergency planning for children, families, seniors, and persons with disabilities to promote personal preparedness, enhance emergency plans, and gather feedback from the public to enhance and strengthen emergency plans.
Topics include: Mass Care Shelter Planning, Issues with Emergency Displacement and Coordinating Medical Insurance, Disaster Impacts for Families & Children, Emergency Reunification, and Disaster Response Best Practice.
Presenters:
Brett Heising CEO/Founder of brettapproved Inc – Inspiring people to travel confidently identifying accessible hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues worldwide. Brett works with community partners to share accessible information and tips to better serve people with disabilities.
Gil Damiani – Retired Emergency Manager from the City of Mesa with over 30 year of service, he is currently a consultant with Coyote Crisis Collaborative working with Day Treatment Agencies and with the Arizona Healthcare Association to strengthen emergency plans, processes, and procedures for long term care facilities.

A free statewide conference focused on planning and preparing to address the needs of people with disabilities during a disaster will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 8 at the Desert Willow Conference Center, 4340 E. Cotton Center Blvd. in Phoenix.
The biennial Arizona Partners in Preparedness Conference will include the following topics:
What to expect in a disaster
Emergency evacuation
Issues with displacement, and
Preparedness for resilient communities.
The summit is presented by Ability360 and the Arizona Statewide Independent Living Council in partnership with the Arizona Department of Health Services and Arizona Division of Emergency Management.
“This is an important conference to ensure we are prepared to assist people with disabilities and their families, personal care attendants, organizations providing services to the disability community and emergency planners and first responders,” said Ability360 President and CEO Phil Pangrazio.
